Elijah Brown leads Monarchs to 45-3 statement win over Duncanville; Bixby, Buford, Corona Centennial enter rankings after impressive victories.
In the biggest game of the young season, No. 1 Mater Dei showed why it tops the MaxPreps Top 25 high school
football rankings after a 45-3 blowout win over previously ranked Duncanville. See this week's rankings below.
Sophomore quarterback
Elijah Brown completed 18-of-23 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in the one-sided affair that matched ranked California and Texas schools for the first time in the MaxPreps era. The Monarchs defense held the Panthers to under 200 total yards and forced two turnovers, including a 38-yard pick-six from five-star cornerback
Domani Jackson.
Mater Dei faces Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) on Sept. 10 at the Polynesian Football Classic. The 42-point loss dropped Duncanville from the rankings.
No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) got a signature win to start the 2021 season beating St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) 38-23 on Saturday in a nationally televised game. Senior quarterback
Zion Turner accounted for 340 yards of total offense and three touchdowns while Jason Taylor's defense forced five turnovers.
The Panthers dropped five spots to No. 13 with the loss and recently had their game canceled against St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.). St. Frances Academy's next game is scheduled for Sept. 11 against Franklin (Reistertown).
Bixby (Okla.), Buford (Ga.) and Centennial (Corona, Calif.) joined this week's MaxPreps Top 25.
Buford beat Clarke Central (Athens) for its 15th straight victory and looks strong in its quest for a three-peat after winning the AAAAA crown in 2019 and AAAAAA in 2020. The Wolves' season-opening win 35-27 over North Cobb (Kennesaw) looks even better now after the Warriors knocked off Milton 40-21 on Friday.
Centennial (Corona) is the fifth California team in the rankings after an impressive 57-14 win over Cathedral Catholic (San Diego). It was the most points the Dons' defense has allowed since 2003.
Bixby enters at No. 25 after the Spartans won their 37th consecutive game with a dominant, season-opening 69-14 victory against Mansfield Timberview (Mansfield, Texas). Senior quarterback
Christian Burke completed 18-of-24 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns. The 2020 MaxPreps Oklahoma Football Player of the Year
Braylin Presley racked up over 130 total yards and one score.
