Basketball Recap: Soroco Takes a Loss

Soroco played a tough contest on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 59-15 loss at the hands of the Nucla Mustangs. The Rams were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-7.

Despite the loss, Soroco still got an impressive performance from Kolbie Pierce, who posted eight points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Pierce is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played.

Nucla found their leader in sophomore Lantry Galley, who went 9 of 17 on her way to 20 points and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Galley has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Viviana Zunich, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 10 points along with eight rebounds and five steals.

Soroco has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-4 record this season. As for Nucla, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 6-1.

Soroco didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 68-18 defeat against Sanford on the 19th. As for Nucla, they will be taking part in a tournament against Telluride at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Nucla knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Telluride likes a good challenge.
