Softball Recap: Edinburg North's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

After flying high against Raymondville last Saturday, Edinburg North came back down to earth. The Edinburg North Cougars took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Weslaco Panthers on Tuesday. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.

Destany Bermudez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on four hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 16 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Edinburg North saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Madison Guerra, who went 1-for-2 with one double.

Edinburg North moved to 15-5-1 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for Weslaco, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-10.

Looking ahead, Edinburg North will head out to face off against La Joya at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. La Joya has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.56 runs per game on average), something Edinburg North will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Weslaco, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 7:00 p.m. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past eight contests -- so hopefully Weslaco likes a good challenge.
