Two dominant signal callers in Pierce Jacobson and Nico Anderson are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The St. Thomas Catholic Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the St. Michael's Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Thomas Catholic is coming into the contest hot, having won their last five games.
St. Thomas Catholic gave up the first points on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They snuck past Concordia Lutheran with a 20-15 victory. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 122nd, while the Crusaders are ranked 373rd) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Myles Stewart and Javaughn Waldron. Stewart rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown on only 11 carries while Waldron rushed for 68 yards and one TD on only nine carries. Stewart's longest rush was for an impressive 56 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for St. Michael's, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They blew past Savio 51-14 on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Warriors in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won three in a row.
St. Michael's didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jacob Garcia and Ian Quinn. Garcia is also on a roll when it comes to defended passes, as he's now defended at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Quinn got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for St. Michael's, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Pierce Kovacs, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
The victory got St. Michael's back to even at 4-4. As for St. Thomas Catholic, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.
St. Thomas Catholic strolled past St. Michael's in their previous matchup back in November of 2024 by a score of 21-7. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Warriors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
