Basketball Preview: Spotsylvania Knights vs. Chancellor Chargers

Spotsylvania is 0-10 against the Chargers since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Spotsylvania Knights' homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Chancellor Chargers at 6:30 p.m. on February 5th. Spotsylvania will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 292nd, while the Chargers are ranked 76th).

Last Friday, Spotsylvania was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 48-44 to the Foxes.

Despite their defeat, Spotsylvania saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. JAYLAH BLACK, who scored 13 points along with seven assists and five rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. BLACK has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. MORGAN MASLOCK was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight rebounds.

In what's become a running theme this season, Chancellor gave their fans yet another huge win on Friday. They claimed a resounding 62-30 win over Caroline at home. Chancellor is really starting to get used to good results now that the team's won 11 straight.

It was another big night for Kendall Scott, who scored 19 points along with six assists and six steals. She hasn't dropped below three steals for 11 straight games. Another player making a difference was Maya Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Spotsylvania's loss dropped their record down to 8-10. As for Chancellor, they pushed their record up to 17-2 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Spotsylvania have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Chancellor struggles in that department as they've been averaging 38.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Spotsylvania suffered a grim 62-37 defeat to the Chargers in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Scott, who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Now that Spotsylvania knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
