Baseball Recap: San Mateo Triumphs

San Mateo came into Saturday's contest having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Northgate Broncos 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bearcats have posted since April 23, 2024.

Jesus Olivas was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because San Mateo is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 2-4 otherwise. Olivas was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.

Olivas wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hayato Nishiyama, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

San Mateo now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Northgate, their loss dropped their record down to 5-2.

Coming up, San Mateo will be playing in front of their home fans against Menlo School at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The match will give San Mateo their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Northgate, they will square off against Campolindo at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
