Oceanside and Mission Vista are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Pirates will square off against Mission Vista at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Oceanside came out on top against Vista on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive 16-run second inning. The Pirates were the clear victors by a 20-4 margin over the Panthers. The victory was nothing new for the Pirates as they're now sitting on three straight.
The team relied heavily on Irie Filo, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with seven RBI, three doubles, and two runs. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in April. Anaiah Filo was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs and three RBI.
Oceanside was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .697. They are a perfect 11-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Mission Vista never let their opponents score on Friday. They put the hurt on San Dieguito Academy with a sharp 8-0 win. The victory continues a trend for Mission Vista in their matchups with San Dieguito Academy: they've now won five in a row.
Rian Hickman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 18 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Addison Rapheal was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Macy Molina, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Oceanside's record is now 13-11. As for Mission Vista, their record now sits at 14-8-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Oceanside hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Mission Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Oceanside couldn't quite finish off Mission Vista in their previous matchup back in April and fell 4-2. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
