Softball Recap: Malad Beats Wendell for Their Ninth Straight Victory

Malad waltzed into their match on Friday with eight straight wins... but they left with nine. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Wendell Trojans a 16-0 shutout. The Dragons have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Trojans, too.

Liddia Gonzalez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 16 over six innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Malad got a massive performance out of Bostyn Combs, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most hits Combs has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Teagan Daniels, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Malad always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wendell only posted an OBP of .143.

Malad's win was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-2. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.8 runs over those games. As for Wendell, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-7.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Malad is set to face off against their familiar foe Declo at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Wendell will take on rival West Side at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
