Softball Game Preview: Bishop Diego Cardinals vs. Castaic Coyotes

The Bishop Diego Cardinals will head out on the road to take on the Castaic Coyotes at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Bishop Diego is coming into the match on a five-game losing streak.

Bishop Diego couldn't beat Coastal Christian on Thursday even though they stacked five runs on them in the fourth inning. The Cardinals fell 9-6 to the Conquerors.

Anna Fittipaldi made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Chelsea Hayes, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one double.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Castaic's offense. They fell just short of Canyon by a score of 1-0 on Thursday. The Coyotes have struggled against the Cowboys recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.

Kate Eppenbaugh spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Tatum McAfee was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Samantha Farell, who went 1-for-2 with one triple.

Bishop Diego's defeat dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Castaic, their loss dropped their record down to 8-13.

Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Bishop Diego hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .347. However, it's not like Castaic struggles in that department as they've averaged .338. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Bishop Diego skirted past Castaic 4-3 in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
