High school girls basketball rankings: Ontario Christian rises to No. 1 in MaxPreps Top 25 after winning rematch with Archbishop Mitty

Unfortunate news for previous No. 1 Mitty as McKenna Woliczko will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.) is back at No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings on the strength of its 61-44 win over Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) at the SI20 Showcase on Saturday.

The victory avenged a 59-34 loss in the final of the Nike Tournament of Champions on Dec. 21. But the game Saturday was largely overshadowed by the non-contact injury to Mitty junior forward McKenna Woliczko.

Without Woliczko, Mitty rallied to tie the game at 40 late in the third quarter but Ontario Christian led by sensational point guard Kaleena Smith finished the game on a 21-4 run.

Ontario Christian takes its young lineup to a national stage again in a few weeks with a Jan. 17 matchup against Olivia Vukosa and Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) at the Hoophall Classic.

Mitty meanwhile will be without Woliczko for the rest of the season as she announced via social media Tuesday that it was an ACL injury requiring surgery. The Monarchs start league play before a pair of games Jan. 17 and 18 against No. 10 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) and No. 3 Morris Catholic (Denville, N.J.), respectively, at Hoophall.

Losing Woliczko hurts but the Monarchs have shown they have plenty of ballers with senior Emma Cook, junior Devin Cosgriff, sophomore point Tiera McCarthy, sophomore Ze'Ni Patterson and freshman Maliya Hunter.

Two teams enter the rankings this week as St. John's (Washington, D.C.) checks in at No. 24 and Providence Academy (Plymouth, Minn.) comes in at No. 25.

St. John's is 13-0 and led by juniors Camille Nesmith (16.6 points per game) and Morgan Stewart (15.4). The Cadets opened WCAC play Friday with a 47-45 win over Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.)

Providence Academy is the top team in Minnesota and led by junior Maddyn Greenway, who is averaging 29.9 points per game and closing in on 3.500 career points. Based on her freshman and sophomore numbers, she should hit 4,000 by the end of the season and chase 5,000 before her prep career is over.

The daughter of former NFL player Chad Greenway also has a sister on the team, Beckett Greenway, who has shown a propensity to score like her older sister. Beckett is averaging 12.0 points per game as an eighth grader and dropped 22 points in each of the Lions' last two games.
