League recap: Polk County stuns Thomas Jefferson Academy in upset

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Thomas Jefferson Academy, who took down 197th ranked Thomas Jefferson Academy, 44-21.

Hendersonville extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Western Highlands this week by beating Owen, 27-0. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.

Desean Jackson was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 16 carries, he ran for 104 yards as Hendersonville bested the Warhorses. Teammate Grant Rivers added to the ground attack by rushing for 83 yards.

Wilson was the best wideout in the league this week as Bj Laughter's team beat Owen. Wilson racked up three receptions for 93 yards. Bryan Wright helped Hendersonville's passing attack out by catching one ball for eight yards.

McKinnon "Mac" Martin put up the best numbers through the air as the Gryphons lost to Polk County. He finished with 11 completions for 134 yards and one touchdown. Martin's favorite target this week was Efrim Borders, who caught seven passes for 89 yards.

Thanks to the talents of Rivers and Jackson the Bearcats have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Rivers leads the league in passing with 1436 yards, while Jackson has rushed for 1300 yards this season. Thomas Jefferson Academy's Borders leads the league in receiving yards with 693 on 43 catches.

Jerry Cash's team's Martin needs only 23 yards against Hendersonville next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Martin has rushed for 977 yards on 152 carries so far this year.

A big matchup in 2A/1A Western Highlands this week will be when the Bearcats take on the Gryphons. As it stands, Hendersonville is in second, while Thomas Jefferson Academy is in fourth.

Mountain Heritage moved up to 298 from 337 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Cougars were able to make the jump by topping Mitchell 28-6.
