League recap: Laurel climbs in standings with win

Laurel was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 4A Region 5. Earlier in the week, the Golden Tornadoes defeated West Lauderdale 33-9.

Northeast Jones extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Newton County, 30-25. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Tigers.

Laurel's dynamic duo of Keon Howard and Ocatvious Cooley proved tough for the Knights to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Howard threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns and Cooley had 152 yards receiving. Chris Horne helped Laurel's passing attack out by catching four balls for 39 yards.

Franklin Jones provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Quitman defeated Northeast Lauderdale. He completed eight passes for 167 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 80 yards. Jones' favorite target this week was Toyell Ball, who caught three passes for 75 yards.

Jamoral Graham was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 163 yards on 15 carries as the Cougars beat West Lauderdale. Teammate Michael Lee added to the ground attack by rushing for 19 yards.

A big matchup in 4A Region 5 this week will be when the Panthers take on the Golden Tornadoes. At the moment, Quitman is in first, while Laurel is in fourth.
