Baseball Recap: Winchester Thurston Drops Highest Score of Season Against Aquinas Academy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Winchester Thurston). They were the clear victors by a 20-7 margin over the Aquinas Academy Crusaders on Monday. The result was nothing new for Winchester Thurston, who have now won four contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

Lucas Picher was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Picher was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mason Witten, who scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Benji Smuckler, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-5.

Winchester Thurston was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .486. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.

Winchester Thurston's record is now 5-1. As for Aquinas Academy, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 2-2.

Winchester Thurston will have a chance to go back-to-back against Aquinas Academy: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
