Desert Vista and Red Mountain are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2015, but likely not for long. The Desert Vista Thunder will take on the Red Mountain Mountain Lions in a tournament on Saturday. Desert Vista is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
Desert Vista picked up another tournament win on Friday. They walked away with a 9-5 victory over Arizona College Prep.
Cole Gomez looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, Noah Gutierrez was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two doubles. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jayden Garrison, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Red Mountain never let their opponents score on Friday. They put the hurt on Sunnyslope with a sharp 10-0 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mountain Lions.
Dylan Keith tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only a hit while striking out seven over 4.1 innings pitched.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hagen Wright, who fired off two home runs, three RBI, and one triple while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Wyatt Bundy, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Red Mountain always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sunnyslope only posted an OBP of .292.
Red Mountain now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Desert Vista, their victory bumped their record up to 3-0.
Desert Vista's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's contest. Desert Vista has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Red Mountain, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Desert Vista continue to outrun the ball?
Desert Vista came out on top in a nail-biter against Red Mountain in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Does Desert Vista have another victory up their sleeve, or will Red Mountain turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
