Basketball Recap: Dawson Judd's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Benson over Bisbee

If Benson was riding high fresh off their 55-24 takedown of St. Augustine Catholic last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Benson Bobcats fell just short of the Bisbee Pumas by a score of 58-55 on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Bobcats have suffered since December 11, 2024.

Benson lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Dawson Judd, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. Judd is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games he's played. Domonik Villa was another key player, going 7 for 11 on his way to 17 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Benson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in ten consecutive matches.

Sebastian Lopez continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Bisbee, putting up 32 points along with six boards and three steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Lopez has scored at least a third of Bisbee's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Hunter Wright, who posted 12 points.

Benson's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 8-16. As for Bisbee, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-10.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Benson Bobcats challenge the Morenci Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Morenci will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Benson surely won't give up without a fight. As for Bisbee, they will square off against St. Augustine Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on January 30th.
