Basketball Recap: St. George's Comes Up Short

St. George has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were dealt an 80-38 loss at the hands of the Piedmont Academy Cougars on Thursday. The match marked St. George's lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Several St. George's players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Knoxie Burson, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. Perrin Boatright was another key player, putting up six points.

Even though they lost, St. George's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive contests.

Marissa Holder continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Piedmont Academy, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 13 rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Holder has scored at least a third of Piedmont Academy's points. Another player making a difference was Sarah Ellen Stroud, who went 7 of 13 on her way to 16 points in addition to seven assists and six boards.

St. George's defeat dropped their record down to 10-2. As for Piedmont Academy, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-3.

While St. George's had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
