Basketball Recap: Thomas Jefferson Comes Up Short

After flying high against Hinkley on Wednesday, Thomas Jefferson came back down to earth. The Thomas Jefferson Spartans were just a bucket shy of victory on Thursday and fell 38-37 to the Aurora Central Trojans. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2018.

When it comes to explaining why Thomas Jefferson lost, don't look at Leyna McClinon. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. McClinon is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Anisa Adrovic, who posted ten points.

Even though they lost, Thomas Jefferson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 15 consecutive games.

Aurora Central's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jamaea Johnson-Gonzales, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. Andena Torres was another key player, putting up 11 points in addition to six boards and four steals.

Thomas Jefferson's loss dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Aurora Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season.

Looking ahead, Thomas Jefferson won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Denver North at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Aurora Central does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
