Baseball Game Preview: Mount Airy Granite Bears vs. West Wilkes Blackhawks

Mount Airy and West Wilkes are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Granite Bears will head out on the road to take on the Blackhawks at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. West Wilkes took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Mount Airy, who comes in off a win.

While Mount Airy's win against Alleghany wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Granite Bears sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Trojans on Tuesday. The Granite Bears haven't had any issues with the Trojans recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.

Landon Gallimore made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. He has become a key player for Mount Airy: the team is undefeated when he posts at least eight strikeouts, but 4-11 otherwise. Gallimore was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

Meanwhile, West Wilkes didn't have quite enough to beat Wilkes Central on Tuesday and fell 9-7.

West Wilkes' loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Mount Airy, their victory bumped their record up to 7-11.

Mount Airy was able to grind out a solid win over West Wilkes in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 5-2. Will the Granite Bears repeat their success, or do the Blackhawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
