Basketball Recap: Rockford East Comes Up Short

Rockford East was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss. They took a blow against the Guilford Vikings, falling 98-38. While losing is never fun, the E-Rabs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 639th, while the Vikings are ranked 139th).

When it comes to explaining why Rockford East lost, don't look at Olivia Irvin. Despite the final result, she posted 19 points. That was a full 50% of Rockford East's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tariah Appling, who earned seven points.

Leading Guilford to victory were Jaleese Williams and Baylee Sandine. Williams almost dropped a triple-double on 22 points, nine assists, and nine steals, while Sandine went 9 of 16 on her way to 25 points and four steals. The dominant performance gave Williams a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Olivia Deshazo, who had 11 points in addition to seven boards and six assists.

Rockford East's defeat dropped their record down to 1-10. As for Guilford, they pushed their record up to 7-2 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season.

Rockford East will host Hononegah at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hononegah will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Rockford East surely won't give up without a fight. As for Guilford, they will head out to challenge Freeport at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Freeport is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58 points per game this season.
