Baseball Game Preview: Silex Owls vs. Clopton Hawks

It'll be a Battle of the Birds when Silex Owls duke it out with Clopton Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Silex lost 15-9 to Veritas Christian Academy on Tuesday.

Chase Vehige was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Vehige was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

Vehige wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Joe Dameron, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Dameron is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season. Evan Mehler was another, scoring a run while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Clopton had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They put the hurt on Community with a sharp 13-7 win on Tuesday. The Hawks haven't had any issues with the Trojans recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.

Clopton let Adam Lindsay and Tucker Salmons run wild. Lindsay scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Salmons scored two runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was James Matheny, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Silex now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Clopton, their win bumped their record up to 1-0.

Silex beat Clopton 7-3 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Silex since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
