Basketball Recap: Organ Mountain Knights vs. Mayfield Trojans

After flying high against Alamogordo last Monday, Organ Mountain came back down to earth. The Organ Mountain Knights received a blow on Wednesday as they fell 46-32 to the Mayfield Trojans. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 54th, while the Trojans are ranked sixth).

Organ Mountain's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Siena Gonzales, who posted 11 points and six boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Silva, who scored six points.

Leading Mayfield to victory were Jazlene Ruiz and Ceanna Mckines. Ruiz went 6-for-8 to rack up 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals, while Mckines shot 45% from the field en route to 12 points and three steals. What's more, Mckines posted three assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Lorrena Viarreal was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Organ Mountain dropped their record down to 8-19 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road. As for Mayfield, the victory was the 22nd in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 23-3.

Organ Mountain does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mayfield, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 51-42 win against Las Cruces on the 28th.
