Basketball Recap: John Paul II Takes a Loss

John Paul II lost against Geneva on January 3rd and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The John Paul II Centurions were outmatched by the Geneva Eagles and fell 81-17. While losing is never fun, the Centurions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 973rd, while the Eagles are ranked 303rd).

Despite the loss, John Paul II had strong showings from Ella Garcia, who posted six points, and Grace Becker, who scored four points. Garcia has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played.

Geneva was led to victory by Kyra Petty and Maegan Riebel. Petty went 7 for 9 en route to 20 points in addition to eight assists and six steals, while Riebel dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten assists. Madeline Egbert was another key player, going 6 of 9 on her way to 14 points.

John Paul II's defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 18-13. As for Geneva, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season.

John Paul II has already played their next game (against The Christian School at Castle Hills), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Geneva will host Incarnate Word Academy at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Geneva will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.
