Softball Recap: Melbourne Comes Up Short

Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Melbourne couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They fell just short of the Baptist Prep Eagles by a score of 10-8 on Thursday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Bearkatz, who until this matchup were averaging 3.25 runs allowed.

Kallie Thornton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and six unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 15 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Maggie Pierson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Marley Rohr, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBI.

This is the second loss in a row for Melbourne and nudges their season record down to 19-8-1. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Baptist Prep, the win (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 12-3.

Melbourne does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Baptist Prep has already played their next game (against DeWitt), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
