Softball Recap: Gretna Drops Season-High Score on Nelson County

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gretna). They were the clear victors by a 9-3 margin over the Nelson County Governors on Thursday. The Hawks not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 19, 2024 (when they won 13-7).

Alyssa Keesee spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sophia Brooks, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Marihlyn East, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

Gretna pushed their record up to 6-9 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Nelson County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-13 record this season.

Gretna will host Altavista at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Nelson County, they will venture away from home to square off against Stuarts Draft at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
