Baseball Game Preview: Centennial Rams vs. La Veta Redhawks

Centennial is 0-3 against La Veta since April of 2022 but things could change on Tuesday. The Rams will venture away from home to face off against the Redhawks at 2:00 p.m. Centennial has given up an average of 24.1 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Centennial is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 16th straight game dating back to last season on Thursday. They came up short against Custer County, falling 29-1.

Meanwhile, La Veta beat Nucla 11-8 on Saturday.

Logan Cortez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Cortez was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Derek James was a standout: he got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Matthew Gonzales, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

La Veta is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Centennial, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-9.

Centennial suffered a grim 14-4 defeat to La Veta in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Rams avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
