Basketball Recap: Spearville Comes Up Short

After flying high against Kinsley last Friday, Spearville came back down to earth. The Spearville Lancers received a blow on Saturday as they fell 61-46 to the Kiowa County Mavericks. The defeat continues a trend for the Lancers in their matchups with the Mavericks: they've now lost seven in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Spearville lost, don't look at Ian Melendez. Despite the final result, he posted 26 points in addition to five boards and three steals. Melendez's evening made it eight games in a row in which he has scored at least 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aydin J Ruiz, who put up 11 points.

Spearville's loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Kiowa County, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Spearville has already played their next contest, a 63-23 victory against Ingalls on the 11th. As for Kiowa County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 46-36 win against Hodgeman County on the 11th.
