Watch Ethan Thompson in action at the CIF Open Division state finals.

Ethan Thompson of Bishop Montgomery led his team to a state championship in 2017 and reaped the benefits by earning multiple Player of the Year honors.

If that scenario sounds familiar, it's because the same exact thing happened 31 years ago when Stephen Thompson, Ethan's father, led Crenshaw to a state title and earned state Player of the Year honors (by Cal-Hi Sports) and All-American recognition.

While Stephen was the Division I state Player of the Year, Ethan has gone one step further and is the MaxPreps California overall Player of the Year. Thompson heads a 30-member California Boys Basketball All-State Team list that includes a first, second and third team and 15 honorable mention selections.

Thompson led Bishop Montgomery through an incredibly tough postseason schedule that included games against Mater Dei (twice), Sierra Canyon and Chino Hills – all teams that were nationally ranked at the time.

Thompson then led the Knights to a 74-67 win over Woodcreek in the CIF Open Division championship game. Bishop Montgomery finished the season 31-2 and No. 4 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings.

Arnold Zelaya of Mission (San Francisco) is the state Coach of the Year. In leading Mission to the CIF Division III state championship, Zelaya became the first San Francisco Section coach to ever win a state championship. The Bears finished the season 35-1.
