Preview: Largo Lions vs. Fairmont Heights Hornets
Two dominant guards in Cameron Ward and Amari Brice-Johnson are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Largo Lions will head out on the road to challenge the Fairmont Heights Hornets at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Largo's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last 11 matchups.
Even though Potomac scored an imposing 57 points on Thursday, Largo still came out on top. Largo took down Potomac 73-57. Given Largo's advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 23rd, while Potomac is ranked 182nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ward was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 33 points and 17 rebounds. Ward is crushing the point category: he's posted at least 18 every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jalen Johnson, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Fairmont Heights has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell to Oxon Hill 71-66. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Largo's win bumped their record up to 17-2. As for Fairmont Heights, their loss dropped their record down to 13-5.
Largo strolled past Fairmont Heights when the teams last played back in January by a score of 81-65. The rematch might be a little tougher for Largo since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
