Baseball Recap: Buckhorn Wildcats vs. Leslie County Eagles
Buckhorn had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 11-20 to make it five. They lost 14-1 to the Leslie County Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-4 back in March.
Buckhorn saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gunner Gay, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
As for Leslie County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-22. They not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 29, 2024 (when they won 18-0).
On Leslie County's side, they got a great performance from Connor Russell as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Russell has posted since back in March.
On the hitting side, Rylan Simpson was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He has become a key player for Leslie County: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 7-21 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Tyler Baker, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Buckhorn will take on Owsley County at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Owls / Lady Owls will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight. As for Leslie County, they will welcome Magoffin County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles are facing the Hornets at the right time seeing as the Hornets are stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
