Basketball Recap: Brookland-Cayce Comes Up Short

If Brookland-Cayce was feeling good fresh off their 71-30 takedown of Georgetown last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Brookland-Cayce Bearcats were outmatched by the Gray Collegiate Academy War Eagles and fell 67-27. The Bearcats were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 33-9.

Despite the defeat, Brookland-Cayce saw an underclassman step up: freshman Dalacia Rouse posted 12 points and six rebounds. Rouse has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kamryn Etheredge, who earned nine points along with seven rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Brookland-Cayce smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 13 consecutive games.

Gray Collegiate Academy got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Raina Mayers out in front who went 5 of 7 on her way to 13 points in addition to five assists and five steals. Those five assists gave Mayers a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kadence Walker-Lee, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 12 points along with six boards and five steals.

With the loss, Brookland-Cayce broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 8-6. As for Gray Collegiate Academy, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

Brookland-Cayce will square off against Aiken at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gray Collegiate Academy, they will take on Airport at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Gray Collegiate Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.1 points per game this season.
