The Cornerstone Charter Cardinals will head out on the road to take on the Uwharrie Charter Academy Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Cornerstone Charter will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
Cornerstone Charter proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 11) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Bishop McGuinness 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cardinals have posted against the Villains since April 18, 2023.
The team relied heavily on Brayden Barbee, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Smith, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Uwharrie Charter Academy). Everything went their way against Eastern Randolph on Tuesday as they made off with a 16-0 victory. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
The result came thanks to Logun Wilkins's shutout, as he gave up just three hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jose Ramirez was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That double was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jaxon Mabe, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Uwharrie Charter Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Uwharrie Charter Academy has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Cornerstone Charter, their record now sits at 10-7.
Cornerstone Charter's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's contest. The Cardinals have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Uwharrie Charter Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Cornerstone Charter continue to outrun the ball?
Cornerstone Charter came up short against Uwharrie Charter Academy in their previous meeting back in March of 2018, falling 7-2. Can the Cardinals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
