Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Makes It Six in a Row at Home

There's no place like home for Mt. Vernon, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They never let the Marshall County Marshals get on the board and left with a 5-0 victory on Friday. This was payback for the Rams, who suffered a 9-6 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Not much got past Eli Prost, who gave up just five hits to keep Marshall County off the board. Prost has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Alex Kiefer, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has become a key player for Mt. Vernon: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-13 otherwise.

Mt. Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They are 5-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 10-14 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Marshall County, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 16-9 record.

Coincidentally, Mt. Vernon and Marshall County will both be playing Zeigler-Royalton the next time they take the field. The Marshals will host the Tornadoes at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the Rams will head out to face them at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
