Football Recap: Topsail Comes Up Short on the Road Against Dixon

Topsail had to hit the road for their first game and it wasn't the result they were hoping for. They fell just short of the Dixon Bulldogs by a score of 42-40 on Friday. Sadly, the loss continues a streak the team started last season, making it five in a row.

Topsail's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Damarion Smith, who rushed for 80 yards and a pair of TDs on only six carries, and Ben McCaleb, who rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown while picking up 7.6 yards per carry. Smith's longest rush was for an impressive 60 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Gunnar Haynes was another key player, rushing for 67 yards on only nine carries.

JJ Gulat was a one-man wrecking crew For Dixon. as he rushed for 286 yards and three scores while picking up 11.4 yards per carry. Those 286 rushing yards gave Gulat a new career-high. Sean Delaney was in the mix as well, providing Dixon with two TDs.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Topsail will venture away from home to challenge Croatan at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Dixon, they will head out to square off against Beddingfield at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
