Baseball Recap: Virginia Episcopal School's Loss Ends Four-Game Winning Streak on the Road

Virginia Episcopal School dropped their record down to 10-5 on Friday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins on the road. They came up short against the Highland Hawks, falling 16-4. If the Bishops were looking for revenge after losing 17-0 to the Hawks when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Nate Gobble and Lawrence Dempsey did some serious damage despite the final result: Gobble went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI, while Dempsey went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Virginia Episcopal School is 8-1 when Dempsey posts two or more runs, but 2-4 otherwise.

As for Highland, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games.

On Highland's side, Justin Summers was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most hits Summers has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Jake Gunning, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Virginia Episcopal School and Highland should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings. The Bishops (ranked 130th) will meet Fishburne Military (ranked 332nd) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Highland will square off against Steward at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with a big rank advantage (11 vs. 113). The timing is sure in the Hawks' favor as the team sits on six straight wins at home while the Spartans have been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
