Baseball Game Preview: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Mission Bay Buccaneers

The Otay Ranch Mustangs will be taking part in a tournament against the Mission Bay Buccaneers at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Otay Ranch comes in on three and Mission Bay on eight.

Otay Ranch proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by seven) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Clairemont 2-1.

Otay Ranch's victory was truly a team effort as two different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Carlos Martinez, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Jake Medina also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Mission Bay hadn't done well against Mater Dei Catholic recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Mission Bay walked away with a 9-4 win over Mater Dei Catholic.

Mission Bay also got a great performance from JJ Hicks as he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kaden Jones, who scored three runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Taylon Erikson was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Mission Bay pushed their record up to 8-0 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average this season. As for Otay Ranch, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2-1.
