Baseball Recap: Widefield Extends Winning Streak to Five

Widefield won against Coronado on Tuesday with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Gladiators put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 12-3 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Gladiators have posted against the Cougars since May 5, 2023.

Liam Gordon made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double. Widefield is undefeated when Gordon posts two or more runs, but 3-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nick Prantl, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Widefield: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-6 otherwise. Luis Garcia also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Widefield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They are 7-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Widefield, bringing their record up to 11-7. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Coronado, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-12.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Widefield is set to face off against their familiar foe Palmer at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Coronado will challenge rival Mesa Ridge at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
