Softball Game Preview: Covenant Day Lions vs. Providence Day Chargers

The Covenant Day Lions will head out to take on the Providence Day Chargers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Providence Day took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Covenant Day, who comes in off a win.

Having struggled with three defeats in a row, Covenant Day turned things around against Charlotte Country Day School on Tuesday. They blew past the Buccaneers 14-4. Considering the Lions have won 13 matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Meanwhile, Providence Day fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Charlotte Latin on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Chargers have suffered since April 26, 2024.

Rachel Lyons spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on nine hits and racked up 20 Ks. Those 20 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

At the plate, Olivia Hartsell was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.

Covenant Day's victory bumped their record up to 14-4-1. As for Providence Day, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-5.

Covenant Day took their win against Providence Day when the teams last played two weeks ago by a conclusive 8-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
