Pennsylvania prep basketball begins with big performances

While football season is wrapping up, high school basketball season got under way this weekend in Pennsylvania.

Top highlights included:

* Christian Locher scored 48 points Friday night in a Mars win over Keystone Oaks Friday night.

* Trinity's (Washington) Josh Valentic scored 41 points Saturday including his 1,000th career point to help the Hillers to a win over Burgettstown. Valentic scored 19 points in the first quarter alone.

* Venango Catholic's Maxx Rynd had 36 points and 15 rebounds in a win over DuBois Friday and then came back with 28 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Keystone Saturday.



* Kittanning's Nathan Stolitza scored 43 points in an overtime win over Riverview including going 23 of 26 from the free-throw line. That outpaced Riverview's Corey Bickert, who had 34 points.

* Quaker Valley (Leetsdale) head coach Mike Mastroianni won his 300th career game with a 69-48 victory over Peadbody Friday. Quaker Valley then beat Quigley Saturday giving Mastroianni a career mark of 301-159.

* Lincoln (Ellwood City) and Carlynton (Carnegie) played one of the highest scoring WPIAL girls basketball games in recent memory Friday night with Ellwood City coming away with a 93-80 win thanks to 30 points from Asia Borders.
