Basketball Recap: Mater Academy Charter Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Santiago Alvarez and Ethan Davis

Mater Academy Charter was the 60-50 winner over Norland when they last played one another back in December of 2019, but their luck changed this time around. The Mater Academy Charter Lions fell 61-49 to the Norland Vikings on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 292nd, while the Vikings are ranked 58th).

Ethan Davis and Santiago Alvarez certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Davis posted 16 points and five assists, while Alvarez had nine points and five steals. Those 16 points gave Davis a new career-high. Jahi Lopez was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 12 boards.

Norland's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lorenzo Major led the charge by going 5 of 12 en route to 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Walcott, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 11 points.

Mater Academy Charter now has a losing record at 9-10. As for Norland, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season.

Mater Academy Charter has already played their next contest, a 45-40 loss against Sports Leadership & Management on the 18th. As for Norland, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 53-48 win against Port Charlotte on the 17th.
