MaxPreps/NFCA Players of the Week for May 1-May 7, 2017

Marcelino, Davis, Neumann, Hawkins, Stephens named 2017 MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Joel Barlow's (Redding, Conn.) Briana Marcelino, Erie (Ill.)-Prophetstown's Ashley Davis, Huntsville's (Ala.) Lane Neumann, Southeast's (Wichita, Kan.) Sydni Hawkins and Durham's (Calif.) Brielle Stephens were selected MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Player of the Week winners for their outstanding play during the week of May 1-7.

East Region

Marcelino was a perfect 10-for- 10 at the dish with a double, triple, two long balls, seven RBI and seven runs scored to help the Falcons to three victories last week. With those four extra-base hits, the senior shortstop slugged 1.900 and also recorded a 1.000 on-base percentage. Marcelino’s big game came against New Fairfield in which she went 4-for- 4 with a double, homer, five RBI and three runs scored during a 13-3 triumph. She again was 4-for- 4 versus Immaculate, tripling, homering and recording two RBI. She capped off the week with two runs scored against Bethel.

North Region


Davis hit .900 (9-for- 10) with a triple, two home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored as Panthers snapped a four-game skid with three wins last week. She recorded back-to- back four-RBI games against Kewanee. In game one, Davis, a senior, went 4-for- 5 with a triple, long ball and three runs scored. Two days later, she was 3-for- 3 with two run scored. Davis concluded her stellar week by homering and scoring twice versus Fulton. For the week, she slugged 1.700 and registered a .923 on-base percentage.



South Region

Neumann collected 10 hits in 12 at-bats to post a .833 average with a double and three home runs. She drove in nine runs and scored eight more, while slugging 1.667 and recording a .846 on-base percentage. Neumann, a senior, started the week by going 3-for- 3 with a double, home run, four RBI and three runs scored against Grissom. In a doubleheader sweep of Hewitt-Trussville, she went 7-for- 9, homered in each game, collected five RBI and five runs.

South Central Region

Hawkins scored 13 runs as she helped the Golden Buffalo extend their winning streak to 14 games. She hit .818 (9-for- 11) with three doubles, two home runs, four walks and eight RBI. The junior shortstop slugged 1.636, recorded a .867 on-base percentages and was flawless in the field, handling all 16 chances without an error. In a doubleheader sweep of Liberal, she was 4-for- 5 with both long balls, four RBI and seven runs. A day later, Hawkins finished 5-for- 6 with three doubles, four RBI and six runs scored.

West Region

Over three games, Stephens was a perfect 10-for- 10 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and an eye-popping 2.100 slugging percentage. She opened the week by hitting for the cycle in a 6-for- 6, nine-RBI outing against Williams. She doubled, tripled, homered and scored six runs. In the nightcap, she registered two doubles and scored three runs. The senior capped off a series sweep by homering, driving in three and scoring four runs.



The 2017 MaxPreps/NFCA High School Players of the Week are announced on NFCA.org every Monday during the spring season, with one representative chosen from each of the five regions. During the spring campaign, a player from each of five separate high school regions is selected.
