Baseball Recap: Mater Dei Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Mater Dei, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Thursday. They walked away with a 4-1 victory over the Gibault Catholic Hawks on Wednesday. The Knights haven't had any issues with the Hawks recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Mater Dei got a great performance from Chase Zurliene as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. The Knights are 2-1 when Zurliene allows one or fewer earned runs, but 3-12 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jack Reynolds, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs. Another player making a difference was Reid Innes, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Mater Dei was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. The last time their batting average was this high was back in May of 2024.

Mater Dei's victory bumped their record up to 5-13. As for Gibault Catholic, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-16.

Coming up, Mater Dei is taking a road trip to square off against Metro-East Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gibault Catholic, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Nashville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Hornets will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Hawks surely won't give up without a fight.
