South Brunswick took a three-set defeat the last time they faced off against Cape Fear Academy, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Hurricanes 3-2. The game was the first time the Cougars have beaten the Hurricanes on their court since August 29, 2019.

South Brunswick had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first two sets, they turned around to win the next three. The final score came out to 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-13.

Mary (Faith) Baker paced South Brunswick's offense, picking up 13 kills. Baker got some help from Savana Burgess and her 18 assists. Baker was also solid from the service line: she led the team with four aces.

When it comes to explaining why Cape Fear Academy lost on Wednesday, don't look at Lila Hammer. Despite the final result, she had 19 digs and three aces. Hammer has been hot for a while, having also posted 12 or more assists the last 18 times she's played.

The victory got South Brunswick back to even at 3-3. As for Cape Fear Academy, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.

South Brunswick and Cape Fear Academy should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Cougars will challenge Red Springs at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (244 vs. 549). Meanwhile, Cape Fear Academy (ranked 97th) will meet North Brunswick (ranked 297th) at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
