Volleyball Recap: Mallory Mahan Leads a Balanced Effort to Beat North Platte

While Pius X didn't have the best season last year (they finished 16-25), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the North Platte Bulldogs 2-1. The Thunderbolts haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Pius X had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next two. The final score came out to 23-25, 25-13, 25-21.

Pius X's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mallory Mahan, who had ten digs and two aces. Those ten digs gave Mahan a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kami Wemhoff, who had nine digs and three assists.

When it comes to explaining why North Platte lost on Friday, don't look at Merci Koontz. Despite the final result, she had ten digs and one assist.

Pius X's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for North Platte, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season.
