Softball Recap: Indianapolis Scecina Memorial Find Success

After low-scoring totals in their previous four game, Indianapolis Scecina Memorial brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They put the hurt on Irvington Preparatory Academy with a sharp 14-8 victory on Saturday. The Crusaders not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since May 21, 2024 (when they won 22-8).

Olivia Covarrubias was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Kayley Campbell and Sydney Gilbreath did most of the damage at the plate: Campbell went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run, while Gilbreath went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. Those runs were Gilbreath's first of the season. Makayla Gary was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Indianapolis Scecina Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .486. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Indianapolis Scecina Memorial's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Irvington Preparatory Academy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Indianapolis Scecina Memorial will face off against Indianapolis Lutheran at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Irvington Preparatory Academy, they will square off against Traders Point Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
