Basketball Recap: Douglas Byrd Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Quntine Alexis and Geomari Young

After flying high against Union last Tuesday, Douglas Byrd came back down to earth. The Douglas Byrd Eagles received a blow on Friday as they fell 65-51 to the Jack Britt Buccaneers. The contest marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Geomari Young and Quntine Alexis certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Young posted 13 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks, while Alexis put up six points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Whitehead, who had 11 points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Douglas Byrd smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Jack Britt found their leader in sophomore DeRyian Mitchell, who went 6 of 8 from beyond the arc on his way to 30 points and seven steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mitchell has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Tubbs, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds.

Douglas Byrd suffered their first home loss, dropping their record down to 4-2. As for Jack Britt, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-4.

It'll be Battle of the Birds when the Douglas Byrd Eagles challenge the Seventy-First Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Seventy-First has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 207 points over their last three contests. As for Jack Britt, they will be taking part in a tournament against Westover at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Westover will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something Jack Britt surely won't give up without a fight.
