Baseball Recap: Capistrano Valley Starts Season with Win Against Portola

Capistrano Valley had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They were the clear victor by a 9-1 margin over the Portola Bulldogs on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Cougars have posted since April 2, 2024.

Cash Osterfeld looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

On the hitting side, Capistrano Valley let Sammy Rucker and Landon Stewart loose on the outfield. Rucker went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Stewart scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Jackson Kosewick was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-1.

Capistrano Valley hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Portola struck out seven times.

Coming up, Capistrano Valley will square off against Diamond Bar at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Portola, they are taking a road trip to face off against Costa Mesa at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Portola is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak dating back to last season.
