Baseball Recap: Trinity Catholic Comes Up Short

Trinity Catholic was the 7-4 winner over South Sumter when they last played one another back in April of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Trinity Catholic Celtics fell just short of the South Sumter Raiders by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday. Celtics fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Raiders since on Tuesday.

Gavin Greathouse was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts.

At the plate, Matthew Wetherell was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aidan Elgart, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and one run.

Trinity Catholic's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 5-6. As for South Sumter, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.

Looking ahead, Trinity Catholic will look to defend their home field on Friday against Trenton at 6:30 p.m. As for South Sumter, they will challenge Hernando at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hernando will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something South Sumter surely won't give up without a fight.
