State and national passing records will be an endangered species all season long as Jake Browning of Folsom (Folsom, Calif.) continues his assault on the record book. The first to fall Friday night was the California state record for career passing yardage.

With 520 yards passing in a 55-10 win over Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), according to stats input into the MaxPreps database, Browning now has 11,505 career passing yards. He passes Michael Herrick of Valencia, who threw for 11,022 yards from 2003 to 2005. Herrick was the state record holder according to Cal-Hi Sports.

Browning also threw seven touchdown passes in the win,  giving him 145 in his career. Jimmy Clausen of Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) is the state's all-time leader with 146.

Browning has been sensational in season-opening games. As a sophomore, Browning tied a state record with 10 touchdown passes against Woodcreek (Roseville). Last year against Woodcreek, Browning threw for seven touchdowns.

The next state record likely to fall for Browning, aside from the career touchdowns record, would be Herrick's record for passing attempts in a career with 1,278. Browning has 1,237 career attempts.

State records Browning already holds:

— Most Touchdown Passes in a Game - 10

— Most Touchdown Passes in a Season - 75

— Most Yards Passing in a Season - 5,737

— Most Passing Attempts Season - 605

— Most Passing Completions Season - 440*

— Most Passing Completions Career - 868 (and counting)
