Softball Game Preview: Monterey Trail Mustangs vs. Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack

The Monterey Trail Mustangs will head out to challenge the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Monterey Trail's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Cosumnes Oaks' hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Monterey Trail proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by nine) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Lincoln, sneaking past 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since April 4, 2024.

Maya Ewing was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in February. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Ewing wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Isabella Barrientos, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Monterey Trail hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Cosumnes Oaks was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Sheldon, falling 16-2.

Monterey Trail has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Cosumnes Oaks, they now have a losing record of 3-4.

Everything went Monterey Trail's way against Cosumnes Oaks when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Monterey Trail made off with a 14-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
