Baseball Recap: Maywood Academy's Losing Streak Snapped at Nine Games

Maywood Academy can bid farewell to their nine-game losing streak thanks to their game on Monday. They blew past the Elizabeth Bulldogs 9-1. The Nighthawks not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since March 21, 2024 (when they won 12-0).

Matthew Hernandez was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

In other batting news, Maywood Academy got a big performance out of Gabriel Soto, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases Soto has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Josue Rodriguez, who went 2-for-4 with one triple and one run.

Maywood Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Maywood Academy's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-8 and their overall record up to 3-12. As for Elizabeth, they dropped their record down to 2-11 with the loss, which was their fifth straight on the road.

Maywood Academy will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Bulldogs: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday.
